The next decade promises to be an important one for Generation Z. While there are many unanswered questions about what their future holds, we can follow current trends to envision what this group will face in the years ahead. As they begin to enter the workforce, Generation Z entrants face stiff competition along with the likelihood that it will take a decade or more to recover lost earning power from having entered the job market during the Great Recession.

More jobs will require at least some higher education, and be dependent on 21st century skills, such as abilities to think creatively, communicate effectively and work in teams. However, higher education costs are skyrocketing, saddling many students with debt for years after graduation and reducing their overall buying power and quality of life.

People have asked me over the past 20 years about my mentorship programs, whether in the web design and development field, career bound college students, real estate investment advisors to start-up entrepreneurs. I want to share what I know about mentoring in the business development and internet technology fields. Throughout my career, I’ve built my own advisory board. Whether it’s in my work or outside of my business aspirations, I have created a group of go-to advisors that helped me move forward. Sometimes, this is as simple as bouncing my ideas back-and-forth with these leaders so that I can see a clearer picture of what I may not have comprehended before. Other times, it’s getting encouragement and advice on how to take my next steps. This is the benefit of having a mentor: a good mentor can help you be your best self.

Now, be aware that your mentor is your confidant who gives you direction and options; however, at the end of the day, YOU have to make your own choices. Your mentor isn’t there to tell you whether you have to go into this direction or that direction. You need guidance and that guidance will only help you down the path you choose to take.

Mentoring is a professional activity, a trusted relationship, a meaningful commitment.
